Project Reflections
Key Takeaways
I learned a lot from this project about what it takes to be a leader. Coming into this project, I didn’t realize how much work it would actually take to be a Team Captain at Thunder U. I found out that being a leader takes time and energy. In order to be prepared to teach and share the things that I was asked to share with my group, I had to plan ahead of time. The first day when I met my group I definitely could have been more prepared, but the second day I planned ahead more because I realized what it takes to lead a group of college students in an activity. The most important thing that I learned is that effective leadership takes preparation.
While it is somewhat difficult to see the impact of my effort as a Team Captain, I have noticed that when I see the students from my group on campus they smile and say hello and usually seem to know what they are doing at this point in their college experience. I feel like I have done my job properly because most of the students who were in my group have found their place in the campus community!
Future plans - One thing that I want to apply to future projects that I learned from this project is the importance of working with people and getting to know them personally. When I remembered the names of and something about each of the students in my group, it was easier to get them to want to come to the events at orientation. I feel like people, in general, seem to respond better to others when they feel like that person cares about them.
If I were to be a Tavi Team Captain again, I would definitely start making my Tavi Pole (A decorative pole that captains carry around so that their groups can find them) earlier. I waited until the night before I needed it, which made it so that I was tired when I met my group of students. Overall, preparation (which I mentioned earlier) is one of the key things that I could have done better.
